A word of caution:
It is unadvised to start floryshing when you are alone in an elevator. It didn't get jammed this time, but next time I might not be so lucky. Especially with that elevator.

I was unarmed, but I acted like I had a longsword. I was going home from work, and thinking about "play". As the doors closed I thought "how would I do X?" By the time I was done there was a very loud creaking, and an extremely noticeable sway to the elevator. It's a fairly new elevator, but it gets stuck all the time. So I was quite afeared.

Yes, that could be highly dangerous.... I did it a few times and my friends around me all stopped me and I could actually feel the elevator swinging inside the space the channel. :S

You want the elevator to sway a little (it may seem like a lot while in the elevator, but it really isn't). You know steel cables are doing their job then. You don't want it to be ridged, it may snap. Even if the cable fails you have a neat mechanism that catches you so you don't fall. I used to help do elevator maintenance a few years ago. As for it getting stuck it is probably that mechanism catching. They probably have it set too sensitive. Elevator cable makes interesting looking patterns when you make blades out of them btw.
My life is like shaving with a razor sharp machete. It's a bit awkward, it stings every now and then, BUT everything said and done I'm happy with the results.

Not of my work, but if you search cable damascus, or cable blades your going to find pics. The pattern tends to be like scales. My favorite (read as ONLY) customer calls it dragon pattern.
Ariel Salaverria has a tutorial with some good pics at the end.

Well like with all forge weld steel there is always a chance that something could go wrong. If done right it is a solid bar of steel. Just some neat patterns in basically a 10xx bar of steel.
