What is the difference between a "fencing mask" and a "3 weapon mask" ,and how do you tell the difference?

A fencing mask or one weapon mask is weaker than a 3 weapon mask. The one weapon mask is made to stop a foil, but not an epee or a saber. The 3 weapon mask has a stronger mesh and will withstand a much stronger blow. The only way I know to tell the difference for sure is with a punch test, which is a little machine that is made to test fencing masks and whether or not they meet the current fencing rules for how much force the mask can take.

I have a white 3-weapon mask that is non-FIE. Would this be safe for sparring?

Also, how should I go about painting/dyeing it red? I wasn't sure about spray paint. It seems like there would be a better way. The bib is not removeable, so I ruled out emersion in dye.

Can't answer the question about safety, but as for coloring I used red fabric paint. You can find it for a couple of bucks at any craft store and it stays colorfast.

Thats what I have and its been fine for me. Its recieved many hits and thrusts with wasters and blunts and only suffered a few dents.

Though you might want to look for one with a removable liner as those things can get really smelly. You'll want to wash it.

Well, lately I've been using a lacrosse helmet. I knew those could take a beating from personal experience. I still need to find a chin strap for it though. :x

I doubt I'm ever going to use this mask for sport fencing again, so I thought I'd go ahead and convert it to ARMA use. My only real issue with fencing masks is that I can't see as well as with as with a hockey or lacrosse helmet and cage. I'm sure much of it is what you're eyes get used to. I spent six years playing either hockey or lacrosse so that is what I've gotten used to.

That mask should be fine, as long as you don't mind it getting bashed up a little. I use red spray paint on mine, but I don't paint the front part of the mask.

I ended up getting a hockey-style catchers mask. I glued the snaps,added a chin strap, and I have to get wire to put over the grill. It works great and is very comfortable. I only paid $38.39 brand new. You must glue the snaps. A Palm heel strike to the chin will pop the snaps off if you don't.

I've been wearing a regular hockey mask for awhile now and i do not wear the "chinstrap" it has an additional strap like a football helmet so i just use that, Jeff Hansen has the same thing and added wire mesh to it and it seem's to work fine, i need to get the wire and do mine, a waster will go through my cage.

I'll also toss in there that if the helmet fits snugly you don't need to strap it on...in fact it might be to your best interest if it just comes off sometimes. I know mine works that way, and it's saved me a nasty neck-twist on more than one occasion.

Good point Jake!

Maybe I'll try to wear something underneath my lacrosse helmet to tighten it up. Since the temps are coming down it shouldn't make me overheat too badly. I'll do some experimenting next weekend at your place!

I will still give the fencing mask a try when I give sparring with wasters a try. I don't feel confident enough in my control yet for that. Perhaps that is something else someone can introduce me to Saturday.
