Definitely not true; if we look at the Roman gladius--the product of a society that used the sword more extensively than medieval Europe before the 14th century or so--the striking fact is that they often had mediocre quality and workmanship. It was as if, having made the sword just good enough to do its job, the Roman weaponsmithing workshops did not see any reason to put any further effort towards improving the average legionary's sword.A master Smith is needed to create a functional sword.
