has anyone built a laminated waster and if you did how did it hold up?
I will be laminating one out of hickory lamination that I had leftover from building a longbow. I can take pics, if that is welcomed, of the process. In the end I think it will be more than strong enough for the purpose.
While I was looking around in the shop I found a wood that is heavier, stronger and most of all tougher than hickory , Osage Orange. I also found a piece of hard wild cherry that i will add to either side of the osage then sandwich it all with hickory.
The guard will be made up of the osage strips with the proper grain orientation and the cherry hickory sandwich as well. this should give 10's of thousands per square inch of strength to the guard.
I will laminate it tonight with URAC 185 wood glue. no other glue has a higher strength for wood to wood bonding and is flexible.
Most wasters that I've seen have been around 2 to 2.5 lbs. with a balance point a bit less than a hand's length past the cross, depending on length. Rough I know, but hey, it's an art.

I can offset the blance where I need it to be so no problem there and I can make that weight easy as well.
I finished profiling the blank, rounded the edges, add the diamond wood cross guard to the hilt and add the epoxy skin coat. I put her back in the oven and will check in a few hours then add a pic .
I sanded the epoxy skin coat smooth and added a leather wrap on the handle. I weighted the waster and it came in a just over 2 .25 lbs. I drilled a hole in the handle to add weight too later but for now I will use it without the weight to begin with.
Waste of perfectly good osage
I look at that and see what could have been a nice BBO or HBO with a sweet r/d profile
Good to see another bowyer playing with swords.
I've seen laminated staffs - no reason a waster wouldn't hold up well.
Nah those are 6" scraps of osage with large knots! I just flat sanded them and glued them up. I have beat the snot out of the pell with it and it shows very little wear., i am happy with it thus far.
I build custom TD hybrid longbows with all bamboo cores and have shyed away from the osage and hickory except in risers so lots of pieces laying around.
