New guy in New York City area.

Post by Peter Cheney »

Hi, my name is Peter. I've recently become interested in fencing, not sure why, it just happened. I've dabbled in martial arts on and off for years, never stuck with any one thing for long.
The philosophy here is very appealing to me.
Now I'll just lurk for a while 'til I have something useful to say.
As of now, I know nothing.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, this is an educational forum after all and we love introducing new people to our art. Welcome!

OK. Are there any groups in the New York area that I might meet up with?

Peter,

I'm in Staten Island. I met with some of the guys in north New Jersey. Good first impressions all around. I would definitely recommend contacting Eric White since you're in Nyack. They would be about an hour away from you. Maybe I'll see you there one day. Good luck and be well.

There are also the New York Historical Fencing Association and Staten Island German Martial Arts in NYC, both focusing on the German tradition. The first is an independent group headed by Mike Edelson and the second is a branch of Selohaar Fectchule (the school headed by Christian Tobler in CT). There's also Schola St George in Hamilton, NJ which focuses on the Italian material, in addition to the ARMA group in Northern Jersey.

You can find most of the contact info on this (very useful) Training Partner Map

Nice to meet you guys today.
If I can figure out a better way of getting there I'd like to show up regularly.
Thanks for having me.

Peter, if you're still interested in studying, I am also new to HEMA and live in White Plains, a short drive (and a toll bridge) away. If you're still interested in studying with someone else, please consider contacting me. I plan on being more involved with the NYHFA than with ARMA, but more practice always helps.
