I'm going to disagree, sort of. You can, as long as you understand that your one-handed waster is going to be more tip-heavy, which will distort technique some. But many cut-and-thrust type swords had simple hilts and looked very much like a simple "knightly" sword.

But Matt's right that if you really want to study C&T you should get more accurate equipment, etc.

Is the detail work on those wasters really necessary? Seems they'd only serve to increase the price and provide numerous weak areas that could snap off to create dangerous jagged points.

I cannot really say if the details are necessary but I guess they do affect the balance. In any case, the details don't seem to hurt. My HollowEarth cut & thrust waster is clearly not as strong as any of my longsword wasters but it has served me well for over five years. I would not "beat" on a wooden pell with it but I do use it hard on a large punching bag.

You don't need all the frills, but you'll want something that is lighter at the tip and has a hilt/cross that you can comfortably finger. Some kind of a ring to protect that finger's a great idea, too.
