Hanwei Mortuary Sword

My friend is shopping for a new sword and wants a baskethilt sword or a mortuary sword. He was looking at a Hanwei mortuary sword as it is inexpensive and looks very nice. I know some SCAdians would swear by Hanwei rapiers and I know you here at ARMA are unimpressed by the longswords they offer. However, the mortuary sword is a different beast and I was curious if anyone could offer some insights on the product.

Never used one myself, though contrary to what you say about ARMA's opinion on Hanwei and the like over yonder I've heard some decent things about all of their products with exception of the immense backlog they have on orders.

I had the blunt version of the Hanwei Mortuary for a while, it was well built but it didn't inspire a lot of enthusiasm possibly the blunt is rather short in the blade, as it didn't seem to have a feeling of authority. Also the basket got me in the knuckle constantly probably an incorrect grip on my part.

Lancelot Chan had some youtube videos of some cutting done with the sharp version.

I have owned this sword for about 4 years now. I find it really fun to use and work with. The grip on mine has come a bit loose and there really does not seem to be an easy way to fix it. The blade is shorter and more narrow than it should be for a real sword of this type, but it is ok and pretty affordable. I haven't had any problems with the basket- of course I'm ALL about the baskethilts.
