Location questions

Post by Todd Trausch »

Where do you train at when you can't be outside because of weather? I have been wanting to find a location that my friend and I could use but I'd like to know what kind of response others have had to asking to use facilities. I have thought about asking the YMCA or tyring a community center. Has anyone else had experiance with those types of locations?

"...even in winter, if it did not rain or snow, they were obliged to perform their drills in the field, lest an intermission of discipline should affect both the courage and constitution of the soldier."
-Flavius Vegitius Renatus
Epitoma rei miliaris, c. 390 A.D.

We train outside in nearly all weather conditions. We have trained in summer heat in excess of 100 degrees, as well as, winter weather in below freezing temperatures. We have trained in torrential downpours of rain. We have trained in snow, etc. With enough dedication, you can train under virtually any conditions.

“A Good Man at Arms Should Not Fear Discomfort.” -Geoffrey De Charny, 14th century

Now there are certainly exceptions and one must use good judgement and common sense. For example, training with steel swords during a lightining storm is never a good idea. Training in a wide variety of weather conditions and upon various topographies can provide many insights into combat variables and make you better equipped to handle a broader spectrum of tactical considerations.

I understand your point but since I'm not actually a professional soldier it is not necessary for me to train in every weather condition.

In the past I would specifically go to parks with large pavilions in case of inclement weather. There was never anyone at the park in those days anyway.

YMCA's etc. usually will want to charge for the building (which is understandable) so that increases price and decreases other people's availability to attend.

I am fortunate enough to have a barn complete with a hanging pell. I only use it when its raining though.
Then he said unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

Hey John! I have one of those too! Sadly one of my vans is filling it at the moment...must hurry and fix the thing!

Is your hanging pell straight or does it have "arms"? Mind is a tree trunk with branches that just happened to be in the right position to simulate outstretched arms. It gets to spinning and makes for some challenging workouts.
