MS 3542

Post by Robert Blackmann »

MS 3542: The Harleian Manuscript.
I am interested to know if any progress has been made on translating the text and where I might find those translations? I found a link to Terry Brown's thesis on the subject but the link didn't take me to the thesis itself and of course I have looked at the verse analysis on this site.
I have started to look at the MS 3542 text myself and made some early attempts at translation (so far only the first paragraph), it appears to be written in a very broad version of middle English that is a mix of basically everything being spoken at the time and also written phonetically so regional dialect has to be taken into account as well. As an English person from Sussex, an area steeped in history, I find the MS 3542 absolutely fascinating.
If anyone can point me in the direction of any translations it would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Rob.

Hi Rob,

For starters, you can try reading this chapter from the recent book "Late Medieval and Early Modern Fightbooks." The chapter title is "Common Themes in the Fightint Tradition of hte British Aisles." https://archive.org/stream/LateMedieval ... 3/mode/2up

Though it isn't an in-depth examination of that particular manuscript, it should at least provide you with a solid jumping-off point.\

That's great David thank you. I have found quite a bit online but never come across that book before. Is a good little read, thanks again.
