How were large swords carried?
Hi there, I was wondering what the sheathes of bigger sword types looked like, and how they were carried and prevented from rusting and such while in the field. How were those carried? How were they stowed? Thanks!

Most of them had scabbards just like any other sword. People frequently just hoisted them over their shoulders or strapped them to horses.

There were some back scabbards but they wouldn't have been carried in battle.

Sheath is a sheath, like any other just bigger to match the blade depending. There are depictions of great swords on the hip like single handed ones and might have been stored on the side of a horse's saddle. I'm sure they were oiled and kept clean on a regular basis. Wouldn't surprise me if there were inspections of some kind, either informally of the older checking up on the younger or formally with leadership checking up once and a while.Jonathan_Kaplan wrote:Hi there, I was wondering what the sheathes of bigger sword types looked like, and how they were carried and prevented from rusting and such while in the field.
